At Chesnut Lodge we use Signalong to support our pupils' learning.
Signalong is a key word, sign-supported communication system based on British Sign Language and is used in spoken word order. It uses speech, sign, body language, facial expression and voice tone to reference the link between sign and word. It is used within school to encourage both receptive and expressive communication. Signed communication has been shown to be of value in improving inclusion and self-esteem and in the reduction of challenging behaviour rooted in frustration.
Some school staff have undertaken the Signalong induction training and 12 members of staff have also completed further training to enable them to better interpret written and illustrated signs. In-house training sessions take place, to introduce new staff to Signalong and can also act as a refresher for existing staff.
Signing is a visual system that supports and encourages communication. It is thought by some, that signs are only useful for people who can’t speak but the benefits of signing go much further than this and can encourage speech, by reducing the pressures and frustrations that developing communication skills often bring.
“Signalong empowers children and adults with impaired communication to understand and express their needs, choices and desires by providing
sign vocabulary for life and learning”.
Signalong is a registered charity which provides resources and training in visual communication based on British Sign Language
