Understanding of the World Week

1st April 2016
This week Chesnut Lodge held an 'Understanding of the World Week' where we dropped down the usual timetable and took part in all kinds of activities.
Tuesday saw primary pupils take part in People Who Help Us Day. They had visits from our local community support police officer Jane, a fire engine from Widnes fire station and even Monty the guide dog with his owners Matthew and Linda. All of the visitors spent time with the pupils, giving them a close up, hands on experience of some of the ways they help others.
Tuesday also saw key stage 3 visit Chester Zoo as part of their geography work on African Animals and to learn about the conservation work done by Chester Zoo.
Wednesday was our ‘Great Outdoors Day’.  The children took part in a ‘Treasure Trail’, a ‘Sensory Walk’, a ‘Gruffalo Trail’ and also used found sticks to create their own works of art. Secondary pupils took part in den building and made a cob bench. Everyone got extremely muddy and learnt lots about the ways that nature helps us to build.
On Thursday we enjoyed science activities all day.  Primary and Foundation stages moved around the school through the day to take part in activities investigating light and sound, magnets, electricity and materials.
Finally on Friday, we held our ‘From the Earth to the Table’ day.  Each primary class made soup using fresh ingredients.  Over the course of the day all primary pupils spent time outside with Tim from Wild Things who worked with the children planting a selection of seeds and herbs.   He also used the herbs to make herby bread with each class group and cooked it on an open fire outside. It was extremely exciting and made school smell delicious all day! Tim also brought lots of sensory feely boxes for the children to investigate and herbs to smell.

Overall our four days have been educational, busy, informative and most importantly, lots of fun! Don't forget to ask us about them if you get the chance.
